There is nothing more terrifying and exhilarating than sharing your art with an audience. You hope they adore it as much as you. It's impossible, really, because we create with our heart and soul, and no matter how much an audience connects with and loves our art, the connection as a creative is a very different one.
Art is subjective.
Everyone has their opinion and is entitled to it. What one person loves, another may find mundane, and in theatre we connect with those stories that excite and enliven us beyond our own experience or reawaken those memories and feelings we thought were lost. It is a mirror to life. A person's opinion on an artwork really tells you more about the person than the artwork.
When you put something beautiful out into the world, it is no longer belongs only to you, but to everyone who experiences it.
We theatre-makers get that little spark of excitement and trepidation on opening night when the audience is just beyond the curtain and ready to react to the beautiful thing we made. It feels like watching your child ride their two-wheeler bike for the first time without training wheels, you worry they'll fall over and graze a knee, or tumble head-first over the handlebars, or maybe they will smoothly navigate the bike path with ease and precision.
As an avid thespian, artist, and educator, I feel this deep in my soul!
I have always loved reading reviews on productions. Experiencing other artist's creative visions and execution through the lens of the reviewer always inspires me and reignites my love for our art. Our little theatre company has survived its' infancy (two years strong!) and we're continually growing and expanding our vision to share creative voices - onstage and off. So we decided, it's time to give back to other theatres and audiences with heart-felt, positive feedback! We want to champion the Creatives, Producers, Technicians, Actors and Musicians and multitude of other people who put so much of themselves into Brisbane's vibrant theatre scene.
Vox Reviews will feature myself and several guest reviewers - we welcome you to join us if you feel inclined. If you've seen a piece you feel inspired to write about, we would love to read it! Everyone's voice is welcome, however we encourage those reviewing to do so from a knowledgeable space; educated and experienced around amateur, pro-am, and professional theatre skills and expectations to produce fair, honest, quality feedback. And to do so from a place of kindness and authenticity.
We can't promise we'll get to every show, but we can promise those we do see will get prompt and positive feedback from people who LOVE theatre!
Much love and gratitude,
Rho & Vox Team xxx
